Defender exterior

Extended black pack.

The silver bumpers, skidpans and grille bar come off and gloss black goes on. Not a stick-on kit: we take the full front and rear bumpers off the car to do it properly.

The two parts

Front and rear, then the sides.

The pack does the bumpers, skidpans and grille bar. The side trims carry the same gloss black down the doors, which is what takes a lower-spec Defender all the way to the higher-trim look.

Gloss black side bumper trims

Side trims that elevate lower-spec Defenders to match the higher trims.

  • Runs along the lower doors and bumper corners.
  • Replaces the rough matte black plastic found on lower-spec models, so the car matches the higher trims.

  • Fits Defender 90, 110 and 130. Around 2 hours to fit. Supplied by Hunters Prestige.

Going fully blacked out

Both parts together are £1,478 inc VAT (£1,231.67 ex VAT). Done in the same visit it is one drop-off rather than two, and the front, rear and sides end up matching rather than nearly matching.

Before and after

Silver out, gloss black in.

The whole point of this job is the difference, so here it is straight. One car we did, then the manufacturer's own renders showing exactly which panels change and nothing else.

A car we did

Defender 90, before and after

Honest caveat: this car had more than the black pack done. The roof light bar, the wheels and the side steps are separate items, so do not read the whole change as £859. What the pack itself did is the bumpers, the skidpans and the grille bar going from silver to gloss black.

Before: black Land Rover Defender 90 with the factory silver front bumper and grille
After: the same Defender 90 with gloss black bumpers, skidpans and grille bar
Just the pack

Extended black exterior pack, isolated

Same car, same angle, nothing else altered. This is the £859 change on its own: the silver front bumper insert and lower grille go gloss black.

Before: Defender front three quarter with the factory silver lower bumper section
After: the same Defender with the lower bumper section in gloss black
Just the trims

Gloss black side bumper trims, isolated

This one is subtle, so look along the bottom of the doors and the bumper corners. The dull matte black plastic on lower-spec cars becomes gloss black, which is the difference between a Defender that looks base-spec and one that does not.

Black pack FAQs

Worth asking before you book.

Straight answers from the workshop. Anything not covered here, message Mitchell and he will come back personally.

What exactly turns black?

The front and rear skidpans, the front and rear bumpers and the grille bar. That is the silver trim that lower and mid-spec Defenders leave the factory with.

The side bumper trims along the lower doors are a separate part at £619, because not every car needs both.

Is this a wrap, a paint job or replacement parts?

Replacement parts. We remove the full front and rear bumpers plus the silver grille and fit the gloss black items in their place.

That is why it takes around 5 hours rather than an afternoon, and it is the reason the finish holds up. It is a substantial upgrade, not a quick stick-on job.

How much is it, fitted?

The extended black exterior pack is £859 inc VAT (£715.83 ex VAT). The gloss black side bumper trims are £619 inc VAT (£515.83 ex VAT).

Both together are £1,478 inc VAT (£1,231.67 ex VAT), supplied and fitted at our Durham workshop.

Do I need the side trims as well?

Not necessarily. If your Defender already has the darker higher-spec side trim, the pack on its own will match it fine.

If you are on a lower-spec car with the rough matte black plastic along the lower doors, doing the pack alone can leave the front and rear looking sharper than the middle. Send your registration and we will tell you which camp your car is in.

How long does it take?

Around 5 hours for the pack, because the bumpers come all the way off, and around 2 hours for the side trims.

Doing both in one visit means the car comes in once rather than twice.

Will it fit my Defender?

Both parts fit the Defender 90, 110 and 130.

Send your registration over and we will confirm against your exact car and trim level before anything is booked in.

Can it be undone if I sell the car?

Yes, and that is a real advantage of doing it with replacement parts rather than paint or wrap. Nothing on the original bumpers or grille is altered, they simply come off the car.

Hold on to them and the Defender can go back to factory silver whenever you want. Ask us to box them up when you collect.

Will this affect my Land Rover factory warranty?

Under UK Block Exemption rules, the manufacturer can only refuse a warranty claim if they can demonstrate a modification directly caused the specific fault.

If you're under factory warranty and want to check first, a quick word with your Land Rover dealer is worth doing. Our 12 month workmanship guarantee covers everything we fit.

Do I need to declare it to my insurer?

Most modifications need declaring to your insurer. Some can affect your premium, others won't. We'd always recommend a quick call to your insurer before booking so you know exactly where you stand on cover and cost.

We supply itemised invoices that make it straightforward to declare what's been fitted.

Where is your workshop and do I need to come to Durham?

Unit 1, Dragonville Industrial Park, Dragon Lane, Durham, DH1 2XJ. We're five minutes from the A1 and easy reach of the A19.

Customers travel from Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Darlington, Yorkshire and beyond. Easy off-street parking on site.

What warranty do I get on the work?

12 month workmanship guarantee on every install. Parts carry their own manufacturer warranty on top, in this case from Hunters Prestige.

If anything we fitted stops behaving as it should within that time, bring the car back and we'll sort it.

No more silver bits.

Send Mitchell your registration and he will tell you which trim your Defender left the factory with, what it needs, a firm price and a workshop slot.

Blacking out the front usually leads to the vented fog lights and grille DRL in the same visit. Pricing a bigger job? The full Defender range lets you cost it in one go.
