About the Land Rover Discovery 5 Commercial (L462)
The Land Rover Discovery 5, internally designated L462, launched in 2017 as the fifth generation of the Discovery line. The Commercial variant is the van specification, sold as a two-seat panel-back rather than the standard five or seven-seat passenger configuration. Land Rover positions the Discovery Commercial for trade, agricultural, security and fleet use cases where rear seating is not required at point of order.
Mechanically the Commercial is identical to the standard Discovery 5: same chassis, same powertrain options across the SD4, SDV6 and Si6 engines, same air suspension and Terrain Response 2. The differences are limited to the rear interior. The rear bench is removed, the rear interior trim is simplified, a flat load floor is fitted, and a full-height bulkhead separates the passenger cabin from the load area.
What this means in practice is that converting a Discovery 5 Commercial back to a five-seater configuration is mechanically straightforward. The mounting points, structural reinforcements and safety architecture all remain in place underneath the load floor. The conversion adds the seating, belts and ISOFIX, and removes the load-area panelling where required.

The market includes everything from M1 type-approved manufacturer kits down to bench seats fabricated in small workshops with no certification at all. ScotSeat is a UK manufacturer of M1 crash-tested rear bench conversions specifically engineered for the L462 Discovery. M1 is the European type-approval category covering passenger vehicles, and certification requires the seat assembly to pass dynamic crash testing including frontal impact, belt anchorage strength testing, and head restraint geometry. Generic conversions without M1 approval cannot legally be sold or fitted as compliant passenger seating.
Beyond certification, the ScotSeat kit integrates with Land Rover's existing structural mounting points and belt anchorage geometry rather than relying on aftermarket plates or bolted-in floor frames. The seat itself is fully upholstered with a quick-release fold mechanism that retains the full commercial load space when the bench is folded down. Leather is matched to your factory front seat specification as standard, with cloth options available on request.

ISOFIX, M1 Certification and What They Mean for You
Every Discovery 5 conversion we fit includes ISOFIX child seat anchorage points as standard. ISOFIX is the international standard for child seat attachment, using two structural anchor points integrated into the seat frame rather than relying on the seat belt. The system is significantly more secure than belt-only mounting, and many high-end child seats are designed to install only via ISOFIX. A surprising number of aftermarket Discovery conversions on the market omit ISOFIX entirely. We include it on every conversion at no additional cost.
M1 type-approval covers the full passenger seat assembly, including the seat frame, the belt geometry, and the head restraint position. A type-approved seat is legally road-compliant for passenger use without further engineering certification, modification or compliance testing required from the owner. The certification is held by ScotSeat as the manufacturer and applies to every fitted unit.
What this means in practice: you fit the conversion, you collect the paperwork, you drive away. There is no separate engineering report to commission, no compliance check to schedule, no further work needed before the vehicle is legal to carry rear passengers including children in approved child seats.
