DEFENDER 90 FAQs

Defender 90 Specific Questions

Detail on the L663 Hardtop conversion, finish options and fitment. General questions about ScotSeat kits are answered on the main hub page.

Will my Defender 90 look factory-fitted after the conversion?
Yes, with our optional finishing pack. The Commercial 90 Hardtop ships without rear interior door handles, D-pillar trim panels or B-pillar handles, because it's built as a van. We fit genuine Land Rover parts to return the interior to full passenger spec, and cover residual factory adhesive from removed window blanks with bespoke Alcantara trim. Optional finishing pack, priced separately on top of the £2,900 base conversion.
Which Defender 90 model years do you fit?
All 2020 onwards Hardtop Commercial models (L663). The conversion is designed for the current generation Defender, not the pre-2020 TDCi shape.
Is there enough rear room in the 90 for adults?
The Defender 90 is shorter wheelbase than the 110, so rear knee room is tighter. The three-seater bench is comfortable for short to medium journeys with adults, and works well for children, dogs and crew. For routine adult passenger use over longer distances the 110 is the better fit.
Does the conversion affect my factory warranty?
The conversion is fully reversible and uses Land Rover OEM parts where applicable. As with any aftermarket work, your dealer is the best source on warranty implications for your specific vehicle. We're happy to walk you through what is and isn't touched during fitting.
Can I add window tints, body kits or other styling alongside the conversion?
Yes. We're a full Defender specialist, not just a seat fitter. While your vehicle is in for the conversion we can also fit window tints, body kits, side steps, wheels, lights and bonnet vents. Get in touch for a combined quote.
THE DETAIL

Background and Engineering Detail

Why the L663 Hardtop is built the way it is, what makes a ScotSeat conversion different, and how the 90 differs from the 110.

About the Land Rover Defender 90 Hardtop (L663)

The current generation Land Rover Defender 90, internally designated L663, launched in 2020 as the short-wheelbase variant of the L663 platform. The Hardtop is the commercial specification, sold as a two-seat van rather than a five-seat passenger vehicle. Land Rover positions the Hardtop for trade, agricultural and security use cases where rear seating is not required at point of order.

Mechanically the 90 Hardtop is identical to the standard 90: same chassis, same powertrain options across the D250, D300 and P400 engines, same air suspension and Terrain Response. The differences are limited to the rear interior. The rear bench is removed, the rear interior trim is simplified, and the bulkhead is reinforced.

What this means in practice is that converting a 90 Hardtop back to a three-seater rear configuration is mechanically straightforward. The mounting points, structural reinforcements, and safety architecture all remain in place underneath the load floor. The conversion adds the seating, belts and ISOFIX, and where required the optional B-pillar handle returns the trim to passenger-spec.

Defender 90 vs 110: Choosing the Right Conversion

The 90 and 110 share the same chassis, the same powertrain options, and the same ScotSeat M1 conversion kit. The difference is wheelbase. The 90 is a shorter, three-door body, with a tighter rear cabin. The 110 is a longer, five-door body, with significantly more rear knee room.

For routine adult passenger use over longer distances, the 110 is the better fit. Rear knee room in the 110 is comfortable for full-size adults on multi-hour drives. The 90 is tighter on knee room because of the shorter wheelbase, so it works best for children, dogs and crew on shorter local trips, or for adults on the school run and into-town distances.

If you regularly carry adult passengers in the rear and the journey distance varies, the 110 is the easier recommendation. If your use case is occasional rear seating, child seats, dog transport or crew movement, the 90 conversion fits the brief at the same £2,900 + VAT price point.

ISOFIX, M1 Certification and What They Mean for You

Every Defender 90 conversion we fit includes ISOFIX child seat anchorage points as standard. ISOFIX is the international standard for child seat attachment, using two structural anchor points integrated into the seat frame rather than relying on the seat belt. The system is significantly more secure than belt-only mounting, and many high-end child seats are designed to install only via ISOFIX. A surprising number of aftermarket Defender conversions on the market omit ISOFIX entirely. We include it on every conversion at no additional cost.

M1 type-approval covers the full passenger seat assembly, including the seat frame, the belt geometry, and the head restraint position. A type-approved seat is legally road-compliant for passenger use without further engineering certification, modification or compliance testing required from the owner. The certification is held by ScotSeat as the manufacturer and applies to every fitted unit.

What this means in practice: you fit the conversion, you collect the paperwork, you drive away. There is no separate engineering report to commission, no compliance check to schedule, no further work needed before the vehicle is legal to carry rear passengers including children in approved child seats.
